10 mile run to Georgetown

Yesterday morning Alan and I went to Baltimore so we ran in the afternoon. Fortunately it was a mild day for July...only in the 80s. We ran to the waterfront, past the Jefferson, past the Lincoln, past the Kennedy Center. Looking up the hill at Georgetown University we saw beautiful Healy Hall (the place in the picture with the steeple) and decided that was our goal.So we kept going....past the Washington Harbour...down the C&O Tow Path....up the hill to Healy Hall...around campus a little...past the baseball field and back by way of the Washington Monument and Smithsonian. You can see by the number of pictures I took (see album below) we were not moving at a rapid pace...but not too bad. It was about 10 miles.

More pictures are on a album at:

Appalachian Trail near Harper's Ferry

We started at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (BRC) near Harper's Ferry, WV. It is about 2.5 miles from the trail head to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. We were greeted at the BRC by 2 cute dogs. The one in the picture decided to be our guide. It was fun having him on the trail with us...at one point he was chasing a deer. He would run ahead of us and then circle back. He was ahead of us when we stopped and turned around....I'm sure he found his way home but I missed him on the return trek.

This is the view from the top of the hill up to the Appalachian Trail. It was a hard climb for me...it's steeper than it looks in this picture. This area is called "Butterfly Alley". When we were climbing up there were lots of beautiful butterflies (see a few pictures in the album http://picasaweb.google.com/jane.quist/AppalachianTrail7707?authkey=bwWyWo4nOqc). This was the only hard part of the run for me...so I didn't feel to badly about my ability to keep up with Alan....who patiently waited for me along the way.

This is at the top. You can see the hill in the back ground....it seems like the one we climbed was that high...or higher...maybe twice as high...or more ;).

This is on the way back. You can see the slope better in this picture. Going down was fun. The butterfly are smart enough to take a siesta in the heat of the day. We saw some in the shady area around Butterfly Alley.

Janie's first long run

Today Alan and I drove about 7 miles to get to a beautiful trail in Rock Creek Park. We ran (and walked) from Pierce Mill (about half way through the DC part of the park)north to the Maryland boarder. There a few pictures on the blog and there are more in the album link below (you may have to cut and paste it into the URL).

It was fun...I am still really tired and we have been home for hours. It was an easy day for Alan but a challenge for me. Alan has been running for a couple of hours each day on the National Mall. He got new Sauconys (half price...great deal. He tells me his are Hurricane 8 and mine are the pro-grid omni 6)that are great for the city.

Blogging is a great companion activity to running....when you get home you're too tired to do anything but sit on the sofa with the laptop!

a few pictures from my walk/run today. i have been cooped up and i was ready to run. i really enjoyed running hard up the hill to the capitol.
we are expecting rain so the clouds were really good tonight....I couldn't resist taking pictures of the clouds, the flowers, and one of my favorite targets....the capitol.

i plotted my route on the google ped site and found i ran/walked about 3 miles.

Alan's running log

Since I don’t have any running to brag about I’ll brag about my husband. Alan ran a lot last week…he’ll have to remind me of the details for the short runs.

Here are his long runs:
April 11: Alan did a 15 mile run
April 21: Alan did a 20 mile run

Here’s what he wrote today:
April 24: I'm going run around Loma Linda in my new shoes (the Inov-8 RocLite 305's-the lime/grey shoes). The first half will be on the hard roads through the neighborhood and then I will head up the dirt trail in the hills and circle back to the parking lot. A good test for the shoes (and me).

Back to Joggin' and Bloggin'

I have been terrible at joggin' and bloggin'. Scott has put down the challenge to getting the running log going. Scott's running blog is http://ikeeprunning.blogspot.com/ so check in to see how he's doing (the truth be known...Scott, Alan and I are probably the only ones who look at my blog!).

Getting married, traveling, and a bad case of the flu really curbed my running. I have been walking a lot. Today I walked for about an hours and a half with a fairly heavy backpack. I walked through “my garden”…the garden next to the Smithsonian castle. I had a big garden in Utah and when I came here I adopted the Smithsonian garden since I usually walk through it when I walk home.

The only wild life today---a few doves in the garden.

February 16, 2007

I just had a really fun run. it is cold but it was fine once i got going. I went to the waterfront. the darn snow is really ice...rock hard ice. some people have not cleared the sidewalks and the street corners are terrible (see pictures below) so i ran for a while then i would have to carefully walk so as not to slip on the ice. still it was a nice run...it felt so so good to be out again after missing some days because of the weather. i can tell my endurance is really improving. i think i will do even better when the air is warmer. i am going to go again tomorrow after the LOC.

weather: sunny about 27 degrees
sighting:lots of bird sitting on the part of the river that was not frozen.

more picture are on my janie's page blog.

February 16, 2007

notice how i am standing on top of the snow...the snow is rock-hard ice.

this ice that fell off a boat into the water. it must have happened during the "heat" of the day. I think it hit 27.

this is a typical street corner. see the cross walk strip on the upper right side? so to cross the street you have to
cross that snow that is really ice so it is like walking on rocks not snow.

this path was solid ice. a guy had his big dog pulling him on the ice and he was just sliding along.

this morning

This is what I saw when I woke up this morning. First snow in a long time. It was warmer after the snow...but still way too cold to run out side. Yesterday after work I ran on the treadmill at the office gym. I like that I can easily time the running/walking sequence. The warm air is easier to breathe...but it is boring! I would have a hard time sticking to a program if it was an indoor deal all the time.

The running is going great...I feel stronger and I can run longer every time. I went back to the treadmill today...even though I am supposed to skip a day...because I will not have time to go tomorrow and I don't want to miss two days in a row.

Weather: in the gym--perfect
Interesting sightings: Ray Romano...and he ran the whole time and was still at it when I left...he is not a novice like me. .

Full Moon

Posted by Picasa

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

It is February 1 and I ran yesterday but I had an RS meeting so I didn’t have time to write. So I will try to remember back 24 hours.

It was really cold but I warmed up quickly when I started running. I ran in the neighborhood. After about 15 minutes I started running on a baseball field…better on the knees. I am running for longer stretches….and that feels good.

Weather: cold
Sighting: the beautiful full moon

Tonight at the Waterfront.
Posted by Picasa

January 29, 2007

Just a quick report tonight: The week 3 plan is -walk 5 minutes - jog 90 sec -walk 90 sec -jog 3 minutes - walk 3 minutes. Repeat the jog/walk sequence. Then 5 minutes to end. I need to figure out a better way of timing...I'm ball-parking it with my cell phone timer....I would like to be more precise.

Here is the most encouraging thing to me...since I am a weather wimp. I was freezing coming home from work with a turtleneck sweater, sweater and long coat, and gloves. I changed to some stretchy jogging pants with sweat pants over; a turtle neck and sweatshirt and gloves....then the magic: a fleece stocking cap! I was sweating when I got home. I love it that I can be warm in the cold! The wind was really cold in places…had to put up the turtleneck collar.

Interesting sights: beautiful sunset on the waterfront.
Weather: about 30…feels like 20

January 28, 2007

today starts week 3!I hit my weight goal for the week...i dropped a pants size!

I got my run in today on the national mall during the peace rally. i went all the way down by the WAshington Monument and ran/walked home. My phone was dead so I didn't have my timer but I think i'm starting to "feel" the right amount of running.

Interesting sighting: o yeah...lot of intersting people and ice skating seagulls.
weather: beautiful...like spring.
