Running Day 1 - January 13, 2007

Today I actually started my new “running programs”. There is so much good information in the internet about how to get started….and the advice is remarkably consistent from site to site. I have decided to follow a plan that I found on wikihow (http://www.wikihow.com/Begin-Running ). I love wikihow.

The plan suggests that you run 60 seconds and walk 90 second for 20 minutes with 5 minute brisk walks on at the beginning and end. I briskly walked from home through the tunnel under 295, up 2nd street in 5 minutes. Then past HHS and American Indian museum and to the Smithsonian then I turned around and went back. It was a nice outing. The walk home was longer than 5 minutes but that was probably fine. I can’t believe how long 60 seconds can be. It really felt good o run. I wanted to do more but the articles say to follow the plan and you’re more likely to stick with it.

Here are the problems so far: I had a problem finding something to wear with a pocket for my key and phone….what about when I want to take my camera and water? I was using the timer on my phone so that I carried it anyway. I was all sweaty so I need a wash and wear hairdo and I will be doing laundry more. The other thing is I have to build up my lungs. I have always had weak lungs form having asthma as a child. I will do yoga every other day when I don’t run (the program said to not go every day) and hopefully that will help my breathing.

So far so good. It really feels good to push a little bit.

Weather: The weather is so mild here…60s and 70s (in contrast to the high of 19 in Provo yesterday). It’s been cloudy and occasional sprinkles.

Sightings: The early blooming cherry trees by the Hirshhorn Museum are blooming! Some of the other early blooming scrubs are also blooming. This is an interesting winter…what will February be like!
